Angela Merkel: The longest-serving chancellor

LONDON — Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit the U.K. next Friday, in one of her last foreign trips before stepping down as the head of the German government.

Announcing the plans, a Downing Street spokesperson said Boris Johnson will host Merkel at Chequers, the prime minister’s country residence.

“This will be a chance to discuss a range of issues, including deepening the U.K.-Germany relationship and the global response to the coronavirus pandemic,” the spokesperson said.

This year marks the end of Merkel’s fourth term as chancellor. She is the longest-serving incumbent head of government in the EU, having led Germany since 2005 and the center-right CDU party since 2000.
